On Saturday, September 20, Governor Newsom signed a comprehensive five-bill immigration package aimed at pushing back against federal immigration raids and protecting immigrant communities. The package includes AB 49 (Asm. Muratsuchi), which restricts immigration enforcement officers from entering schools without a judicial warrant; SB 627 (Sen. Wiener), which prohibits law enforcement from concealing their identities during operations; SB 805 (Sen. Pérez), which requires law enforcement officers to clearly identify themselves by displaying their agency name, officer name, or badge number; SB 81 (Sen. Arreguín), which prohibits healthcare provider entities from granting access to nonpublic areas to immigration enforcement without a judicial warrant; and SB 98 (Sen. Pérez), which requires schools to notify parents and staff when immigration enforcement officers are present on L-12 and college campuses.
“The AAPI Legislative Caucus stands in strong solidarity with the Latino Caucus in celebrating the signing of this critical immigration bill package, especially at a time when our immigrant communities are facing increasing attacks and hostility. These new laws are vital to protecting immigrant families, especially our students. We thank the Governor for affirming California’s values of inclusion and justice by signing these bills into law,” said Assemblymember Mike Fong (D-49), Chair of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus.
Together, these bills are a state-level initiative to reaffirm California’s commitment to safety and dignity for immigrant families.
